I had this entire thought in mind and then I went to find my laptop and straight forgot. Well, such is life. And old(er) age. Been thinking about a lot of things including the idea of how energy is spent and how much of my energy I spend on hate. I had a moment (several actually) when the Lady Talis had to check me on the hate. I was specifically disgruntled about CFB storylines from a gender perspective. I was upset about the portrayal of CJ (and Tommy) Carr’s mom as the sole parent involved. They focused on her several times in the game, neglecting to reflect on the fact that she is A) Married to the Dad and B) Pop was a Michigan QB and Grandpa was the coach there. So, yeah… It triggered me. I’m triggered a lot lately. I think I realize why now: It has a lot to do with the fact that truth doesn’t matter anymore.
It’s Kayfabe. The term is wrestling based, but it is working well here. “An unwritten theatrical agreement where everyone knows the conflict is staged or exaggerated, yet they participate in the drama as if it is real.” They don’t care what is true or not. Trump is their guy and they want their guy to win. Outside of politics this holds equally true with so many aspects of life, including that common storyline about athlete mothers. It’s about the story people are generating and that story is what keeps us tuning in. We want to see the twists and turns. We want to choose sides and want our side to win. It works, because nothing is real to us. It’s all manufactured drama on some level. We are drenched in manufactured drama, so we see all of it–anything put on a screen as manufactured drama.
My daughter used to see pictures and refuse to believe they were real. She called them photoshopped, in spite of the fact that I took the picture myself. It didin’t matter. She didn’t accept the reality because accepting reality didn’t matter. Think of that writ large. That’s what mass media is.
Some Thoughts:
- Almost didn’t write again today. Day was great but in a sense it got away from me.
