My eldest son wants to go to Desert Vista High School, but in the last two years they’ve had two major racism issues hit the media. Obviously he is all but oblivious to this sort of thing. He just likes the school because it is the feeder from his middle school and his friends will be there. I get that. I went to a high school where few of my middle school friends went and it was like starting over again. He’s a well-liked kid and doesn’t want to go through that process of making a bunch of new friends and being uncomfortable. On the other hand, that is to me part of what a kid his age ought to be doing. He needs to reach out and explore new friendships.
What it will ultimately come down to is a conversation between he and I where we measure the pros and cons of the school and he gets to express what he wants to do with his high school years.
